Are the citizens of the so called Information Society informed citizens? The asumption is that an unfettered press is a necessary tool for democracy. Confidence in mainstream media was dwindling, new sources of information proved unreliable, commercial revenues were flowing out of mainstream media to new media, mostly outside the field of news or information, and finally many governements opposed free information.
